Just when it seemed like Arizona Cardinals running back Rashard Mendenhall had a lock on the number one spot at the position, it looks like the job could be up for grabs once again.

In tonight’s third preseason game against the San Diego Chargers, where the Cardinals first team offense has struggled for the most part. Mendenhall was the only bright spot; he had six carries for 47 yards. But according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com, Mendenhall injured his right knee and is questionable to return.

Also Urban has reported that Mendenhall is walking around so hopefully that is a good sign. But with Mendenhall probably finished for the preseason as starters don’t play in the fourth game, he can rest and get healthy for week one of the regular season. Finally, this a good opportunity for the other running backs on the roster such as Alfonso Smith, Ryan Williams, and Andre Ellington to show Bruce Arians what they got to make this team.

The preseason is almost over and somebody in this backfield will have to prove that they can stay healthy to be a major factor in this offense.
