Arizona State Inks Deal With Adidas

On Tuesday, Snoop Dogg helped announced an eight-year, $33.8 million agreement between Arizona State athletics and Adidas to his 11.7 million Twitter followers with “Coach Snoop” written across the back of an Arizona State Adidas football jersey.

The switch from Nike to Adidas will double the amount of equipment and cash that they would be receiving from Nike on an annual basis on the contract they are receiving now. It will also change the price of new jerseys that the teams wear as well.

This year, the Arizona State football team wore their “Desert Fuel” jerseys for the home game against Notre Dame. These jerseys cost the program $400,000 to have Nike create the jersey for them. With the new deal with Adidas, new jerseys will be significantly cheaper and they will have more of a say in the design of the jersey as well.

It makes perfect sense for Adidas to throw this much money to be with Arizona State as the athletics program is booming the past few years. The football program has been playing some of the best football they have ever played and have an even brighter future with Todd Graham at the helm.

The basketball program is competing with top-notch teams and even took down No. 2 Arizona at home last year on national television on ESPN. Men’s hockey is becoming a Division I sport beginning in 2015 as well. It’s the perfect time for these two parties to come together.

All Arizona State teams will transition to Adidas uniforms. Arizona State will be Adidas’ 12th licensing partner at the collegiate level, including Michigan, Kansas, UCLA and Tennessee (switching to Nike in 2015). ASU was sponsored by Adidas from 1999-2004 before signing a 10-year agreement with Nike that will expire in July 2015.

When the teams do fully switch over in July 2015, Arizona State will have the ninth college athletic apparel contract in the nation behind Notre Dame, Michigan, UCLA, Kansas, Tennessee, Florida State, Auburn and Maryland. That’s some pretty great competition on the national stage for Arizona State to be compared to, while also making them the top Pac-12 team in the nation in this category.
