Markieff Morris Makes A Comment On Fan Support

It was not a good night for the Phoenix Suns, both on and off the court.

Following their blowout loss to the Spurs, Suns forward Markieff Morris made his frustrations be heard to the media. Instead of making comments regarding the game, Morris took a much different direction.

Morris took to his Twitter account soon afterward to clarify his comment.

And another one.

Clearly his comment was during a moment of great frustration. His team was coming off of a game where they scored only 74 points and lost by 27 points to a team that they are trying to catch in a very difficult Western Conference.

I don’t think it was the intent of Morris to criticize the fans, at least I hope it wasn’t. Most fans are middle class people helping to pay for these guys salaries, so making any critical comment regarding them is never a good idea for a professional athlete if they want to remain in that city.

While saying that, Morris does have a point. It’s not just at Suns games, but fans at all sporting events here in Phoenix reach their loudest point when there is a t-shirt toss instead of during live game action. It’s embarrassing how quiet the crowds are at times.

Despite being right there for a playoff spot, the Suns still haven’t done well in attendance this season. Phoenix has had only a couple of sellouts and are 22nd in attendance in the NBA this season. Their 17-13 record at US Airways Center might have something to do with that.

In order to help this team make the postseason for the first time in five years, fans are going to have to show up and get loud. Like Morris said on Twitter, this team can’t protect the home court without “the best fans in NBA.”

Hopefully fans can take his comment to heart in the final couple months of the season.
