As if the Arizona Diamondbacks could afford to have anymore bad news on the injury front this weekend you can now add starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy to that list. A shoulder injury as the Diamondbacks have called it will put McCarthy on the 15 day disabled list. To replace McCarthy on the roster, Arizona has recalled pitcher Randall Delgado from Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks acquired Delgado in the Justin Upton trade this offseason.
The Diamondbacks aren’t sure if Delgado will start in McCarthy’s place or it could be Tyler Skaggs who started last Monday versus the Texas Rangers in the first game of the doubleheader. Back to McCarthy, he wasn’t having a good season with a 2-4 record and a 5.00 ERA in 11 starts. Interestingly enough, McCarthy said he started feeling like he was having problems with his shoulder in last start which was on Thursday. McCarthy said “It’s the same stuff, same spots.” He continued to add, “It’s the weirdest deal I just wake up in the morning and know it’s coming.”
This is sad to see McCarthy goes through this because he knows its coming and this has happened to him each of the last five seasons. It’s obvious that this shoulder inflammation affected McCarthy in his last start against the Texas Rangers. Against the Rangers he only threw 2 2/3 innings while giving up six hits. Brandon McCarthy will return to Phoenix on Sunday as the team is in Chicago and get an MRI on Monday.
