What Can Paul Goldschmidt Do For You? Diamondbacks Defeat SF Giants 3-1
By Jovan Alford
Jun 6, 2013; St. Louis, MO, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (44) drives in a run on a fielder
In a game that was marred by a great pitching matchup between the San Francisco Giants’ Matt Cain and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Patrick Corbin the game ultimately was won off the bat of Paul Goldschmidt. The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants tonight 3-1.
On the mound for the Diamondbacks was Patrick Corbin who is 9-0 on the season with a 1.98 ERA and looking for his 10th win. Sadly it would not come tonight as he really pitched a gem tonight. He threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits, one earned run, and striking out four.
The pitcher who he was opposing tonight isn’t bad himself and that was Matt Cain. Cain who is 4-3 this season with a 5.09 ERA pitched an equally good game to deserve the win. Cain threw seven innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, walking three, and striking out four.
But the game would come to the battle of the bullpens and in the eighth inning it was Jeremy Affeldt of the Giants versus Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks. You should already know who won this battle. Paul Goldschmidt hits an eventual game winning three run home run off of a 2-0 pitch from Affeldt. From that point on, that is all Heath Bell needed as he closed the door and got his 11th save of the season.
It’s amazing it see the kind of streak Goldschmidt is on as he now has 15 home runs and 57 RBI. Outstanding numbers for the young first baseman and I’m not saying he deserves to be a MVP candidate but if he keeps it up he will be in the All Star Game in July and will be getting MVP considerations.
