If you didn’t see the Phoenix Coyotes-Detroit Red Wings game last night, the Coyotes defeated the Red Wings 5-2 and swept the season series. That was not the biggest news to come out of that game. The biggest news was that towards the end of the game, Coyotes goalie Mike Smith who had a great game himself, scored an empty net goal.
Per the L.A. Times, Smith said “I didn’t think it had the legs to get there. But just adds to the win.” It sure did have the legs to get there and he puts his name in the record books with that goal scored.
He becomes the third goalie in three years to score a goal, the other two goalies were Cam Ward of the Carolina Hurricanes back in 2011-12 and Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils in 2013.

The Phoenix Coyotes are now 5-2-2 on the season and next play on Tuesday at 10:00 pm against the Calgary Flames. This will be another home game for Phoenix as they look to keep climbing up the Pacific Division standings behind Anaheim and San Jose.
