The Arizona Wildcats open the season with an intriguing match-up against the UNLV Running Rebels.  UNLV is a lower teir mountain west opponent but the Wildcats have questions at quarterback. QB questions means this could be a dangerous game for the Wildcats who are expecting more wins in Rich Rodriguez’s third season.

Rich Rod has been juggling snaps between four QB’s during the fall camp.  He recently announced that Anu Solomon will get the start but he will be on a short leash.

"“That doesn’t mean that he plays the whole game and that he will be the starter the rest of the season but I also don’t want any quarterback to ever go in thinking as soon as I make a mistake I’m coming out,” he said of his decision. “That’s not going to be the case either, but I thought he deserved the right to start the first game. I’m confident that Anu will play well and he will be the starter as long as he plays well and we win.”"

Arizona’s quarterback situation isn’t uncommon.  Coaches sometimes take the entire non-conference schedule to figure out who the starting signal caller would be.

The most recent example of success with this strategy are the Michigan State Spartans who finally settle on Connor Cook after the third game.  Cook eventually led the Spartans to Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl victories.
