The Arizona Cardinals were living the high-life as they would begin the season undefeated, 3-0. Two of those wins were with the Cards’ backup quarterback, Drew Stanton.

It is now quite a different situation for the Cardinals…

The Cards lost their first game of the season on Sunday to the Denver Broncos to bring the Cards’ record to 3-1. In the process, the Cards’ backup quarterback, Stanton, got injured and had to leave the game with a concussion. So, the backup to the backup had to come into the game, rookie Logan Thomas.

Thomas looked a little rattled as he participated in his first real NFL action. Thomas was sacked multiple times and would only complete 1 pass out of 8 attempts. Although, the one pass Thomas would complete would go for a touchdown to running back, Andre Ellington.

Going into next week, the Cards take on the Washington Redskins with uncertainty as to who will be their starting quarterback and, also, who will be the backup. As of now, the Cards only have three quarterbacks on the roster and, with two of them being injured, the Cards may have to add another quarterback this week to be an emergency backup.

In regards to the quarterback situation Cardinals’ head coach, Bruce Arians, had this to say when talking to reporters on Monday:

"“I’m comfortable with Logan when he gets all the snaps and all the reps that we’ll be able to put a plan out there for him to be successful…”“We feel like one of those two (Palmer or Stanton) is going to be back. If not, obviously we have to move onto door number two and get somebody to back up Logan…”"

On possibility of adding another quarterback to the roster this week:

"“We will exhaust all our options as to who is available and the right fit, at what cost…”“They’re not going to help us, so it’s going to be somebody hopefully that knows what our protections are and can possibly be a backup.”"

So, as of now, the quarterback situation is just a big question mark which is most definitely something any team wants to have to deal with going into their next game. I think Logan Thomas could be an adequate quarterback if he is forced to start this week on the basis that Thomas gets all the 1st team reps in practice this week. Thomas played on an average level in the preseason and being average may just enough to propel the Cards to a victory in this week…hopefully.

Carson Palmer has a shoulder nerve injury, Drew Stanton has a concussion, and both still have the possibility of being back this week. There is also the possibility of both quarterbacks not being available this week and maybe longer.

Much confusion surrounding the quarterbacks but one thing is for sure, the Cards have faced adversity before and have played through it. This may be a whole another level of adversity but, with the appropriate planning and game planning, the Cards can get past this bump in the road even though this bump will be the largest obstacle they have faced this season.
