Arizona Coyotes Continue Dominance Over Edmonton Oilers
The Arizona Coyotes defeated the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night 7-4. Mikkel Boedker continued his hot streak as he picked up his first career NHL hat trick. With the win, the Coyotes continued their dominance over the Oilers, extending their points streak against Edmonton to 14 games. Under Head Coach Dave Tippett, the Coyotes are now 16-2-3 against Edmonton. With the loss, Edmonton remains winless and has given up 13 goals in two nights.
Mike Smith got the start in goal after sitting out the game against Los Angeles. Despite giving up four goals, Smith had a somewhat good night in net. He made good saves when he had to and the goals that got put in are opportunities that should never have materialized. Two goals were the result of turnovers made right in front of the net. One of the goals came off a very Joe Louis Arena like bounce off the boards that popped out in front of the net. The other came off of a 2-on-1 when Defenseman Zbynek Michalek turned the puck over at the Edmonton blue line.

The question coming into the season for the Coyotes was offense. Tonight there was plenty of that. Mikkel Boedker scored three picking up a hat trick. Kyle Chipchura, Rob Klinkhammer, Martin Erat and Connor Murphy all picked up one. This offensive outburst isn’t something to get used to though. Despite what the score says, the Coyotes actually played a very sloppy game. There were many missed passes, they turned the puck over a lot, the defensive zone play was sloppy and they lost more than a few battles along the boards early on that killed any offensive zone time that they may have had. It was more that the Coyotes took what Edmonton gave them instead of generating their own chances. After the game Dave Tippett said on Fox Sports Arizona, ” I would have liked to see us be more sound. We got away with it tonight but it was a sloppy game.”
However, a win is a win, and the Coyotes took advantage of the bad play by Edmonton to earn the two points. The win is great but there is work to be done before the Coyotes take on a much better St. Louis Blues team this Saturday in the final game of the home stand.
