The Arizona Coyotes defeated the Anaheim Ducks Friday night 3-2 in a shootout. Tonight’s win had shades of their 2011-12 season, hanging around in the game against a better team with rock solid goaltending and timely scoring.

The Coyotes began the game with some rather sloppy play. Offensive pressure by Anaheim led to a early power play. Ryan Getzlaf was able to convert to give the Ducks an early lead. Shortly after that, Anaheim would strike again. Matt Belesky put a rebound in a wide open net. Arizona picked up the pace and held a good chunk of time in the offensive zone but were unable to capitalize.

The Coyotes carried some of that momentum form the end of the 1st into the 2nd period. Rob Klinkhammer got the Coyotes on the board with a deflection from Martin Hanzal’s shot. 58 seconds later, Shane Doan tied the game ripping a wrist shot passed Andersen’s glove.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the 3rd period. For Coyotes fans, it was tense period of hockey. The Ducks peppered Smith with shots and kept the offensive zone pressure on almost all period. The Coyotes played sloppy in their zone on defense that led to quality chances and three penalties. Despite successfully killing them all off, they were unable to pick up any momentum. The Ducks missed the net on some quality chances that helped keep the Coyotes in the game.

The overtime period wouldn’t be as one sided as the 3rd period was. Both teams had chances to score but were unable to find the back of the net.
