Arizona got a pleasant surprise today as they received a verbal commitment from 4-star quarterback Braxton Burmeister. As a sophomore, Burmeister comes in at 6-1 190lbs out of La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla, California). Burmeister is rated as 2017’s #5 dual threat quarterback in the country who held offers from The University of Florida and held the interest of LSU and UCLA as well.

As a freshman, Burmeister ran the varsity offense for La Jolla Country Day, who finished with a 5-6 record on the season. Starting all 11 games, he threw for over 1,100 yards and finished with 13 touchdowns on five interceptions. On the ground, he finished with over 500 yards and eight touchdowns. Now as a sophomore, he showed much improvement, totaling over 2,100 yards in the air with 19 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He proved himself to be effective and elusive in the pocket when necessary, finishing with just under 500 yards on the ground, totaling 10 touchdowns.

Burmeister still has two more years of high school to develop and we’ve already seen great improvement from his first to second year in high school. It’s hard to tell what the quarterback situation will be like when Burmeister arrives on campus, but he should be in prime position to lead Rich Rodriguez’s offense and pick up where Anu Solomon leaves off.

The first half of his sophomore year highlights are below.

Arizona shows a lot of promise in a few years and it can all start with Burmeister at the helm. By the time he comes to Tucson, Rich Rod’s top 25 2014 class will be fully developed and ready to go. Arizona holds the #35 class for 2015 with 23 commits, none of which are quarterbacks, putting Burmeister in prime position to take over in a few years. For what it’s worth, Arizona now holds the #6 recruiting class for 2017 with Burmesiter’s commitment.
