Arizona State Falls to Oregon State, 35-27
The Oregon State Beavers join the UCLA Bruins as the second team to knock off the Arizona State Sun Devils as the Beavers came away with a 35-27 victory over the Pac-12 South leading and No. 6 ranked Sun Devils.
Oregon State (5-5, 2-5) outscored Arizona State (8-2, 5-2) 21-3 in the second half as the Sun Devils offense was completely absent.
Taylor Kelly finished the evening going 22 of 44 for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. His second interception of the night was returned for a touchdown with under two minutes in the game that allowed the Beavers to take the eight point lead.
DJ Foster led the Sun Devil rushing attack, finishing with 51 yards on 14 carries. He also caught eight passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. It was the 37th consecutive game in which Foster caught a pass.
Kelly’s main target on the year was once more his main target again as Jaelen Strong brought down nine catches for 103 yards. It was his first game since the UCLA contest in which he didn’t record a touchdown however. Strong was injured on a play late in the 4th quarter and did not return for the last possession of the game.
Sean Mannion, 251 passing yards and two touchdown passes, received some serious help from his back field on Saturday night. Oregon State entered the contest averaging 109 yards per game. The Beavers surpassed that number on two plays in the first quarter.
Storm Woods opened the scoring with a 78-yard touchdown run and Terron Ward followed that up with an impressive 66-yard touchdown run. Ward would finish with 148 yards and Woods had 125 yards as they repeatedly defeated the Sun Devil’s front-seven throughout the game.
The Beavers were 0-for-9 on their first nine third down conversion attempts, but their first conversion was huge. Mannion connected with Jordan Villamin on a 67-yard touchdown pass that helped OSU take a 28-27 lead. It would be their only 3rd down conversion of the night, finishing 1-for-12.
Victor Bolden also brought in a touchdown catch, one of seven receptions on the night, while racking up 72 yards.
Arizona State will host the Washington State Cougars at home next weekend against for senior night. It will be more like a “senior afternoon” as the game will kickoff at 11 A.M. MST.
