Arizona Coyotes Fall To Washington In Overtime
The Washington Capitals defeated the Arizona Coyotes 2-1 in overtime Tuesday night.
Washington opened the scoring up with a shot from the slot that beat a screened Mike Smith. The Coyotes had seven shots in the period but they weren’t quality and were one and done. They struggled to sustain any offensive zone pressure. The period ended 1-0 but Arizona had a minute and a half of power play time that would carry over to the 2nd.
The Coyotes began the 2nd period on the power play. They weren’t able to score on the man advantage but they did build some momentum. Shortly after the power play ended, Sam Gagner set up Oliver Ekamn-Larsson for a wide open net with a beautiful pass and he didn’t miss the chance, tying the game up at 1-1. Arizona dominated the period but couldn’t make Washington pay.
The 3rd period was a very tight defensive battle by both teams. There wasn’t much playing either zone as both teams went back and forth in the neutral zone. Coyotes’ defenseman Zybnek Michalek saved a goal by clearing a puck off the goal line that deflected off of his stick late in the period. The Capitals threatened late with heavy offensive zone pressure but couldn’t score and the game would be headed to overtime.
Arizona outplayed Washington in the overtime period but just couldn’t score. Washington’s Eric Fehr put in a rebound from directly in front of the net just out of the reach of Mike Smith.
