Arizona Coyotes Defeat Division Rival San Jose Sharks
The Arizona Coyotes defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in a shootout.
The Coyotes started the game off great. They’ve been struggling offensively at 5 on 5 as of late, but Arizona was able to sustain a good forecheck. Devan Dubnyk was also tested early and he came up big. San Jose took a penalty early and the Coyotes were able to cash in. Antoine Vermette snuck a puck through Niemi’s pads to give Arizona a 1-0 lead on the power play. After being waived and then called back up due to an injury to Brandon Gormley, David Schlemko has been contributing offensively since then. He was able to find the back of the net and grab his first goal of the season late in the 1st period, giving Arizona a 2-0 lead. Arizona gave up 11 shots to San Jose, but it was actually one of the Coyotes’ best periods all year. They took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Coyotes carried that momentum into the 2nd period and was given a power play early. Unfortunately, Arizona wasn’t the team to score on the ensuing power play. The Sharks picked up a shorthanded goal and cut into the lead, 1-0. The Coyotes continued to play good hockey the rest of the period but they just couldn’t score. The Sharks capitalized and were able to tie the game late into the period. It was tied 2-2 heading into the 2nd intermission
The Coyotes wasted no time in responding with a goal of their own in the 3rd. Just 52 seconds into the period, Shane Doan put a rebound in the net off of a Sam Gagner backhand shot. The Sharks weren’t going away though, they tied the game at 3-3 on a power play halfway into the 3rd. AS the period went on, both teams were bringing the offensive zone pressure. Neither team could score however, and the game was headed to over time.
Arizona took a penalty only 1:05 into the overtime period, but they were able to kill it off. The Sharks came very close to winning but the penalty killers and Dubnyk kept the puck out of the net. Arizona had a few great scoring chances courtesy of Sam Gagner and Tobias Rieder but Niemi answered.
