Arizona Coyotes Can’t Hold On Against Colorado
The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 in overtime. The Coyotes lead the game 3-0 at one point, but still couldn’t hold on and win.
The Avalanche started the game winning the offensive zone time battle but it was the Coyotes who would strike first. Early into the 1st, Antoine Vermette deflected a Michael Stone shot into the net and the Coyotes took the lead. Halfway through the period the Coyotes struck again. Another shot from Michael Stone was deflected by an Avalanche player and found its way into the net. Only 33 seconds later, Tobias Rieder made it 3-0. After the 3rd goal, Avalanche Head Coach Patrick Roy made a switch in goal pulling Reto Berra. Arizona took the 3-0 lead into the intermission.
The Avalanche came out with a push in the 2nd period. They definetly had the Coyotes on their heels this period. The dominant style of play from Arizona in the 1st period was nowhere to be seen. Colorado would cut into the lead fairly early on in the period. Gabriel Landeskog got the Avalanche on the board as he beat a sprawled Mike Smith. The Coyotes pushed back a bit late in the period and held the Avalanche to just the one goal.
Colorado began the 3rd period the same way they did the 2nd. Landeskog buried another puck in the net cutting the score to 3-2. Shortly after that, Matt Duchene banked the pucked in off of Lauri Korpikoski and over the shoulder of Mike Smith and the game was tied. Both teams went back and forth trading scoring opportunities but neither could score and the game was headed to overtime.
The Colorado Avalanche scored the game winning goal late in the overtime period. Daniel Briere passed the puck across the front of the net and Martin Hanzal deflected the puck into his own net.
