Yasmany Tomas Is Cornerstone Of Diamondbacks Rebuilding Effort
By Tony Fischer
On Wednesday the Arizona Diamondbacks and Yasmany Tomas agreed to a 6 year deal for just over $11 millions per season. The Cuban outfielder can opt out after 4 years.
It was projected that Tomas would get upwards of $15 million a season so for the Diamondbacks the price was right. The $11.4 million annual committment is perfect for the Diamondbacks who were looking to improve their line-up without inflating the bottom line.
Tomas figures to play right field for the Diamondbacks and hit in the middle of the order. General Manager Dave Stewart has talked about moving Trumbo to left because he struggled defensive in right field last season.
Tomas should help provide some more power from the 5th or 6th spot in the order. The Cuban defector hit 30 home runs with 105 RBI in 205 games over 5 seasons for the Havana industrials. There is not question about his power but there is some questions about his glove. If his glove ends up being below average it could make for a long season defensively for the Arizona Diamondbacks outfield.
The Diamondbacks are hoping they grabbed a cornerstone piece for the rebuilding effort. The contract gives the Diamondbacks payroll flexibility in future a seasons while adding outfield stability for at least four seasons. Tomas’ offensive capability gives the Diamondbacks a much need boost at the plate after ranking 13th in the national league in home runs. Now all that’s left is to see if the Cuban national can handle the daily grind of a 162 game MLB Season.
