Arizona Coyotes Recall Brendan Shinnimin
Arizona Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the team has recalled Brendan Shinnimin from the Coyotes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Portland Pirates. Shinnimin wasn’t drafted and signed with the the Coyotes on March 2, 2012 as a free agent. The Coyotes’ “youth movement” continues as the team continues to search for stability on the ice.
In 19 games played with Portland this season, Shinnimin has scored four goals, notched 10 assists and has 14 points. He also carries a plus three player rating. His 14 points rank second on the Pirates so far this season.
There are definitely some high hopes for Shinnimin and he has the potential to be a very good NHL player. He has a history of being a big offensive threat and has the stats and some hardware to prove it.
In the 2009-10 he led the Tri-City Americans in scoring. He finished the season 27-55-82 in 70 games played. In the following season, he again led the Americans in scoring. He was also tied for fifth in the Western Hockey League (WHL) in points with 96. That season saw his numbers increase all around finishing 34-62-96 in only 60 games played. In the 2011-12 season Shinnimin was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) player of the year. He also won the CHL’s Top Scorer award that year totalling 134 points. He finished his award winning year at 58-76-134 in 69 games played.
Naturally, his numbers dropped off a bit when he entered the AHL as there is an increase in the competition’s skill level. Despite that, the Coyotes still favor him to be one of the top prospects within the organization. Like recent Coyotes’ call up Tobias Rieder, Shinnimin can score and has speed with good vision that can create opportunities in the offensive zone. He definitely has the potential to make an impact on the team.
There has been no official word on when he will make his NHL debut with Arizona.
