Samajie Grant cited for DUI after Territorial Cup win
By Gabe Encinas
Just reported by KVOA News 4 Tucson, sophomore receiver Samajie Grant was cited this morning for suspicion of DUI just south of campus. This news breaks after the Territorial Cup victory over #13 Arizona State. Grant finished the day with four catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns, both of which were phenomenal plays. From being one of the heroes of the Territorial Cup, to putting his time in jeopardy of making the College Football Playoffs, Grant made of the biggest mistakes of his life. With the win over Arizona State, the Wildcats clinched the Pac-12 South, earning a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
Head coach Rich Rodriguez and athletic director Greg Byrne have both released statements concerning the incident. Rich Rodriguez has decided that Grant will not start this week against Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Bryne also says Grant will take part in community service an counseling for his actions. Once the news broke, Grant took to Twitter.
Over the course of the last four games, Grant has caught 18 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns. No other Arizona receiver has more than 173 yards in that span. He’s been one of the most productive and versatile receivers in the group and now it’s up to his teammates to pick him up.
DaVonte Neal is going to have to play the game of his life on Friday. Drops and mishandled punts have plagued Neal all year, frustrating many, especially coming in as a former 5-star transfer from Notre Dame. Freshman receiver and speedster Tyrell Johnson will also see more action in the slot. Receiver has been the deepest position for Arizona, so there are plenty of options for Anu. It’s just the timing that disappoints.
Consider this a learning experience and keep your head up, Samajie.
