The Arizona Coyotes defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 Monday night. Arizona was able to break a three game losing streak and a six period goalless streak.

Arizona and Edmonton were pretty evenly matched in the 1st period. Both teams never really set up any consistent offensive zone time. Despite that, Edmonton was still able to jump out in front with a power play goal. Aside from that, there was not much going on in the period. The Coyotes killed their second penalty and Connor Murphy left the game with what appeared to be a left arm injury, after he was checked hard into the boards. Arizona came close to a goal in the final minutes of the period but just couldn’t get the puck in the net.

Arizona would start the 2nd period on the penalty kill, and it was actually a good thing. Tobias Rieder scored two goals on this one penalty kill. Shortly after that, Arizona was on the power play and Oliver Ekman-Larsson notched another goal for Arizona. In the blink of an eye it was now a 3-1 game with Arizona leading.  Edmonton wouldn’t give up though. They pushed back and brought some offensive zone pressure and sustained it for a majority of the period. Mike Smith made back to back great glove saves to keep Edmonton to only the one goal. Arizona’s offensive outburst wasn’t finished, even in the dying seconds of the period. Mikkel Boedker scored the Coyotes’ 4th goal with only 16 seconds left.

Arizona began the 3rd period right where they left off in the 2nd, with a goal. Martin Erat scored on the power play giving Arizona a 5-1 lead. Edmonton again pushed back bringing heavy pressure in the offensive zone. Despite the score, the Oilers were persistent. Edmonton did pick up another goal to make it 5-2, but that would be it. They didn’t give up and there were some close calls, but Mike Smith and the defense were up to the challenge. Mike Smith made good saves and the defense blocked as many shots as they could to hold and win the game.
