Andre Ellington Could Be Out Four Weeks
By Tony Fischer
The Arizona Cardinals have been flying too close to the sun relating to injuries this season. The latest of which is Andre Ellington who left Sundays’ game with a hip injury. Ellington has gained 660 yards rushing this season averaging just 3.3 yards per carry but is has been just enough to keep defenses honest. But Andre Ellington’s injury doesn’t look good. Id he can’t return it could be a devastating blow to an offense that has been struggling mightily as of late.
Bruce Arians and the Arizona Cardinals have been mum on the timeline for Andre Ellington’s return but have ruled him out for practice on Wednesday. Andre Ellington has missed practice before because of a lingering foot injury but a hip pointer is different.
Quite often the media throws out injury terms without throughly explaining the type of injury that occurs. According to SportsMD.com, a hip pointer is a contusion on the bone on the brim of the hip (iliac Crest). Sever contusions can include hematoma and bleeding.
SportsMD also explains the treatment which could include several days of rest to make sure the bleeding has stopped.
"It has been suggested to delay treatment, other than with ice, for 48 hours to allow all bleeding to stop prior to treating a deep contusion any further. An acute injection of corticosteroids (ie hydrocortisone) into the injured area may greatly reduce symptoms in the short term and speed up rehabilitation."
That means Andre Ellington will be resting for at least two days until they can start treatment. After that it all depends on how his hip responds before he can return to game action much less practice.
"Return to play ranges based on the severity of injury, and treatment modalities used. With conservative treatment and physical therapy, on average one can expect full recovery within two to four weeks. An injured athlete may return to play once full range of motion and strength have returned."
If Ellington is out four weeks that means he likely won’t be available til the end of the season. Of course he could return earlier with a speedy recovery and the Cardinals might need him to if they can’t find a suitable replacement.
