Calgary Flames Continue Dominance Over Arizona Coyotes
The Calgary Flames once again defeated the Arizona Coyotes 5-2. For a team that had played the previous night, Arizona actually played really well. The loss certainly wasn’t due to a lack of effort, they just ran into a good team with a goalie on a hot streak.
Tonight’s game began just like last night’s game did, with a goal from the opposing team. Calgary took a 1-0 very early in the period, but Arizona fought back. Oliver Ekman-Larsson tied the game shortly after Calgary scored. Arizona was in control of the period, they were able to sustain offensive zone pressure and played very well on defense when they had to. Surprisingly, after playing last night, Arizona appeared to be the team that was playing with more energy. Despite the good play, Calgary was able to grab another goal very late in the 1st period and taking the lead back.
Arizona started the 2nd period on the power play. They weren’t able to score on the power play, but they did score right after it ended. Sam Gagner scored an empty net goal as a shot by Keith Yandle deflected off of the Calgary goaltender, and the game was tied once more. Arizona was again the better team in the period. They continued to play well on both sides of the puck. Unfortunately, Calgary was still able to take the lead again. The period ended with Calgary out front 3-2, but Arizona continued to play hard after giving up the lead. Mike Smith kept his team in the game with a few big saves as well. Arizona went into the intermission still looking energized after playing last night, and the game was still well within reach.
Arizona came out in the 3rd still playing well but just couldn’t find a way to score. Calgary added to their lead to make it a 4-2 game. Arizona didn’t give up though. They continued to play well in the offensive zone and created many scoring opportunities, but the Flames defense and goaltending kept Arizona to only two goals. With Mike Smith pulled for the extra attacker in the final minutes of the game, Calgary was able to score an empty net goal to seal the deal.
