The College Football Playoff selection committee have released their latest rankings and in doing have left the door open for the Arizona Wildcats to make the 4 team college football playoff. Arizona moved up  4 spots to number seven in this weeks rankings leaving them within striking distance of the first ever playoff.

This would only be possible if the Arizona Wildcats were to upset the Orgeon Ducks (again) in the PAC 12 champiosnhip on Friday. But even with a win the Wildcats are gonna need some help.

Help in the form of losses by some of the teams in front of them.  All of the top ranked teams (save TCU and Baylor) have conference championship games this weekend.  The tough match-ups will make for some interesting football channle flipping if the Arizona Wildcats can come away with a win.

Think they have no chance? Consider this, every one of the conference championships have upset potential.

  • Florida State dropped to number 4 their lowest ranking of the year. They will play #11 Geogria Tech in the ACC Championship. They have been escaping with narrow wins all season long and have been penalized for it.  Could this be the week the Seminoles lose and drop out of the playoff picture?
  • #1 Alabama plays #16 Missouri for the SEC Championship.  Alabama has looked tough all season but they face a highly motrivated and confident Missouri Tigers team looking to make their mark as one of the SEC’s elite.
  • #5 Ohio State squares off against Wisconsin for the Big Ten Title. Ohio State suffered a devastating set back after losing quarterback T.J. Barrett for the rest of the season.  The Buckeyes have already overcome losing one quarterback but it will be very difficult to overcome that kind of lose for a second time.

The Arizona Wildcats will need losses by one of more of these teams to sneak into the playoff but only if they beat the Ducks.  That will be a tall order considering Oregon has been playing some of their best football as of late.
