9/26/2014 – Kirk Gibson Fired
Just a day after La Russa hired Stewart as the teams new General Manager, former National League Manager of the Year Kirk Gibson was dismissed from the Diamiondbacks.
Gibson, who was behind many memorable baseball moments throughout his playing career, could not inspire a roster of veterans to pull off the same type of magic in 2014.
Former General Manager Kevin Towers had saddle the team with big contracts for players who lacked production, many of whom also struggled with injury in 2014. The combination of those two factors led to a terrible 64-98 record and made Gibson a natural scapegoat for the Diamondbacks on the field performance.
On the other hand, the move was necessary to begin the process of completely remaking the roster, a process that would begin in earnest during the offseason.
