Over the course of a recruiting cycle, you win some battles and you lose some battles. Last week, Christian Kirk, the best player in Arizona, picked the Texas A&M Aggies over his hometown Arizona State Sun Devils, but the blow has since subsided after the good news that Todd Graham and company received on Tuesday.
Davon Durant, a linebacker from Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, committed to the Sun Devils on Tuesday afternoon. Durant had offers from several top schools in the country, including Florida State, Oregon, Georgia and USC.
Scout.com lists Durant as a five-star player and the fourth best JUCO player in all of the country. 247 Sports, another recruiting service, ranks him as the 12th overall junior-college prospect.
Here’s a brief scouting report on the latest ASU commit to the 2015 class.
"Durant is a player who currently spends most of his time on the edge of the defense, shutting down his half of the field. He has a scary size/speed combination and will chase plays and run down ball carriers from one side of the field to the other. He is big and physical and makes sound tackles. Coming off the edge he asserts an abundance of pressure on the opposing offense. Instant impact LB. – Greg Powers"
Scout lists his aggressiveness, athleticism and size as Durant’s strengths. He has your prototypical size for a middle linebacker at 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds. The recruiting service has discipline as a weakness for Durant.
Durant becomes the 16th commit for ASU in the 2015 class. He joins high school seniors Malik Lawal and Khaylan Thomas as the three commits at linebacker in this class.
With signing his letter of intent early, Durant will enroll on the campus in January. That will make him eligible for spring practice, which should give him a leg up for early playing time come next season.
This commitment is certainly a great get for Graham and the Sun Devils. Given his experience and skill set, there’s a good chance that Durant comes in and contributes right away on a defense which was extremely young in 2014.
