Arizona Cardinals Win Would Be Confidence Boost For Playoffs

Despite already clinching a playoff berth, the Arizona Cardinals still have a lot to play for when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon.  A Cardinals win coupled with a Seattle loss will clinch the NFC West and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. That could mean everything for a Cardinals team still struggling with injury.

More from Arizona Cardinals

Drew Stanton had been scheduled to return for week one of the playoffs but he reported on Friday with swelling in his injured knee.  After having his knee scoped, Doctors discovered an infection. The infection has Stanton’s potential playoff return on hold and could mean the end of his season.

Stanton’s setback was the back drop for a minor quarterback controversy. Bruce Arians has officially tapped Ryan Lindley to start against the 49ers after saying earlier in the week he would give Logan Thomas a try.

Whether it be Lindley or Thomas starting under center on Sunday is really insignificant compared to the playoffs.  If Lindley or Thomas are forced into starting in the playoffs, it will be extremely difficult for them to win, especially if the game is on the road.

That is why a win on Sunday will not only give the Cardinals a chance at a home game but could also give whomever the Arizona starter is a boost in confidence, and possibly an extra week to prepare. Whatever the result on Sunday, Arians remains confident that if his players execute at their positions his team will be successful.

"“It’s not the end of the world,” Arians said. “Obviously, we would have liked to have it they easy way, but our goals haven’t changed.”"
