The Ottawa Senators defeated the Arizona Coyotes 5-1 Saturday night. Arizona struggled to get their offensive game going all night long and Ottawa took advantage of Arizona’s mistakes to win the first of two games against Arizona this season.

Arizona began the game off great. They had control of the game’s momentum and kept the pressure on Ottawa’s defense. Mikkel Boedker even gave the Coyotes a quick lead with a beautiful shot from the slot. Unfortunately, Ottawa wouldn’t go away that easily. The Senators were given a power play and they would take advantage of it. Milan Michalek tied the game up and Ottawa was firmly in control of the period after this goal.  The Senators had the Coyotes on their heels for the rest of the period. Ottawa scored again to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

More from Arizona Coyotes

Arizona played a little better in the second period than they did in the first, but still couldn’t get anything going. Coyotes’ had good offensive chances but struggled to get shots off and sustain the pressure. There was a lot of one and done plays for Arizona on offense. Arizona also had a few power play opportunities but still couldn’t find the back of the net. Coyotes appeared to have scored about midway through the period, but after review, the puck never completely crossed the goal line. That was an unfortunate play because shortly after the no goal, Ottawa went down and scored another goal to go up by a pair. At the end of two, Ottawa held the lead 3-1.

The pace of the game didn’t change much in the third period. It began with carry over power play time for Ottawa and it was almost killed off but a turnover on a clearing attempt lead to yet another Ottawa goal. Arizona was still having trouble getting anything going on offense and was given another power play but still could not score. They were able to move the puck around really well on the man advantage, but struggled to get shots on goal. Ottawa finished the third period very strong and even added a fifth goal with only six seconds left in the game to seal the deal just in case the Coyotes were planning on making a six second comeback.
