Arizona Coyotes Lose Fifth Straight

The Winnipeg Jets defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 on Sunday night in the shootout. Arizona played really well for having played the night before. The Coyotes trailed by two late in the third but were able to tie the game up. Unfortunately for Arizona, they couldn’t score in the shootout and lost their fifth game in a row.

The first period began with Winnipeg in control of the game. They had Arizona on their heels early on. On a bad pass byMikkel Boedkerin the offensive zone, Winnipeg snagged the puck and scored the game’s first goal not even five minutes into the period. Arizona bounced back shortly after though.Oliver Ekman-Larssonscored a goal on feed from behind the net byShane Doanand the game was tied. Arizona’s goal came on their first shot of the game after being out shot 5-0 by the Jets. The period evened out more and the two teams were somewhat even. The period ended with a 1-1 tie.

The second period was more of the even play. Winnipeg and Arizona went back and forth trading opportunities. The Jets took the lead on an absolute gift of a turnover.Mike Smithplayed the puck from behind the net but his pass bounced of ofConnor Murphy’s stick and right toMichael Frolikwho put it in the wide open empty net. Arizona had some chances but just couldn’t score. Smith made some stellar saves to keep the deficit at one and the Coyotes went into the intermission down by one.

Arizona played well in the third for the most part. They had really good looks at the net, but continued to have difficulty scoring. The Jets took a 3-1 lead on a 2-on-1 chance coming off of a botched Arizona odd man rush. Arizona kept fighting though. Arizona scored on a power play late in the period to come within one goal of tying the game back up. Shortly after Arizona’s second goal,Tobias Riederdeflected a shot from Shane Doan and into the net, and the game was tied at three and the game was headed to overtime.

Both teams had fantastic scoring opportunities in the over time period, but neither could score and we were off to the shootout.
