In a pivotal matchup between two Pacific division clubs going different directions saw the Arizona Coyotes fall to the San Jose Sharks 4-2 on Friday night in Glendale.

Arizona’s newest acquisition payed dividends almost immediately. Mark Arcobello, who was claimed off waivers earlier in the week, put the Coyotes ahead 1-0, only two minutes into the game. Arcobello, who’s skated on the behalf of four clubs this season, centered the second line with Lessio and Gagner.

Later in the first period, the Coyotes were able to show San Jose why their power play unit was ranked sixth in the NHL at the time of puck drop. Martin Erat scored his eighth goal of the season to put the Coyotes ahead 2-0. Keith Yandle notched his 36th assist and his 26th power play point, the latter of which is good for second among all NHL players.

Less than 30 seconds into the second period, Joe Pavelski got the Sharks on the scoreboard with his 29th goal of the season. Later in the second, San Jose was able to showcase their own power play unit as Pavelski scored his second goal of the period to tie the game 2-2.

The third period saw the Sharks take a 3-2 lead within the first seven minutes of action. Rookie skater Barclay Goodrow was able to score his fourth goal of the season with the help of Brent Burns who got his 29th assist of the season. Burns is currently among the top 10 NHL defensmen when it comes to assists.
