Diamondbacks: Yasmany Tomas Hits First Spring Home Run

The Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas hit his first home run in Spring Training today as he took Oakland Athletics’ ace Sonny Gray deep to right field.

On a 3-0 pitch, Tomas was given the green-light to swing away at a pitch that was close and swing he did. The ball ended up clearing the right field fence on an opposite field bomb.

Tomas entered the game with a 2-16 (.125 average) clip at the plate, with a double and a triple being his only hits. Now, he is just a single, the easiest of them all, away from having at least one of each type of hit in the Spring.

This is the first of many home runs Diamondbacks fans should expect to see from the Cuban third basemen this season. He hit 15 long balls in just 81 games in the Serie Nacional league season in 2012-2013 before adding an additional two home runs in six games during the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Tomas has adapted well to his new ball club. His teammates even began to give him “Rookie Treatment” in his Spring Training debut against the Arizona State Sun Devils last week.
