In a wave of moves by manager Chip Hale, Nick Ahmed was named the Opening Day short stop for the Diamondbacks.

It was announced a few days before Opening Day that Chris Owings would move from short stop to second base and Ahmed would start at short stop. The odd man out was veteran Aaron Hill, who will make appearances at second base and third base off of the bench.

Like Lamb, Ahmed also played exceptionally well in Spring Training. In 21 games, Ahmed put up a .311/.344/.410 slash line and hit eight doubles in the process. Ahmed also showed his speed on the base paths by stealing three bases in his four attempts.

Defensively is where Ahmed does his best work. In 133 innings this spring, Ahmed turned 14 double plays and finished with 43 assists and 31 put-outs. He did all of this without committing a single error.
