Coyotes in Memorial Cup Playoffs 1st Round Update
The 1st round of the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL playoffs has just been wrapped in the Canadian Hockey League. Many Arizona Coyotes prospects have been vital in aiding their respective junior clubs advance. Some prospects have been carried by their teams in hopes that they will soon produce.

With the 2nd round of the playoffs starting in the next few days, Arizona’s representatives have gone from an initial 12 prospects to 8. Among the Coyotes storylines in the next chapter of this postseason are a marquee matchup, a set of goaltenders squaring off against each other, and the sluggish play a recently acquired asset.
Ontario Hockey League
- London Knights (Max Domi, Christian Dvorak) vs Erie Otters
There may not be more sets of eyes on a series other than the London Knights-Erie Otters. The London Knights feature two Coyotes prospects in Max Domi and Christian Dvorak. Meanwhile, the Erie Otters boast potential 2015 #1 overall pick, Connor McDavid. Along with McDavid, is fellow projected Top 5 draft pick, Dylan Strome. Needless to say, there will be a highlighted interest in this marquee matchup.
During the regular season, the Top 3 Points leaders were Strome, McDavid and London Knight (also a projected Top 5 pick) Mitch Marner. Domi and McDavid were teammates on the World Junior squad that won gold in January. Depending on the NHL Draft lottery, McDavid, Strome, or Marner could soon join Domi and Dvorak as Arizona property.
- Niagara IceDogs (Brendan Perlini) vs Oshawa Generals
With all the hype surrounding the series above, the Arizona 2014 1st round pick should not be overlooked. Brendan Perlini has showed great form in what has been the best postseason showing in his OHL career. His IceDogs defeated the #4 seeded Ottawa 67’s in the first round, 4-2.
The new challenge for Perlini and Niagara will be in the form #1 Eastern Conference seed, Oshawa Generals. The Generals golden boy comes in the form of Michael Dal Colle, the 2014 5th overall pick for the New York Islanders.
- Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (Michael Bunting) vs Guelph Storm
One team that took a extended break from competition is the #1 seed in the Western Conference, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. After easily sweeping and dispatching the Saginaw Spirit, the Greyhounds were able to rest up and scout their potential opponents.
With his performance at a high level, one wouldn’t be able to tell that Michael Bunting has only played in four games this postseason. The Greyhounds will have to get past a Robby Fabbri-led Storm before they can faceoff against the winner of London-Erie.
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
- Quebec Remparts (Anthony Duclair) vs Charlottetown Islanders
The Quebec Remparts were able to escape and advance out of the 1st round against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in a series that required all 7 games. Unfortunately, they weren’t aided very much by highly touted and most recent Coyotes prospect, Anthony Duclair.
The former New York Ranger prospect will have a chance to redeem himself in the upcoming series against Charlottetown. In each of his previous two playoff appearances with Quebec, Duclair has accumulated 8 points.
- Gatineau Olympiques (Yan Pavel Laplante) vs Rimouski Oceanic
During the 1st round of the QMJHL playoffs, the Gatineau Olympiques were able to pull off the greatest upset of all the CHL playoff matchups. The #14 seed Olympiques proceeded to shock the #3 seed Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
The road to the Memorial Cup will not get any easier for Gatineau. They are now set to the take on #1 seed Rimouski Oceanic. If they’re going to pull off a double feature, Gatineau will need for Yan Pavel Laplante to step as he’s pointless in 6 games.
Western Hockey League
- Calgary Hitmen (Brendan Burke) vs Medicine Hat Tigers (Marek Langhamer)
The only WHL matchup that features Coyotes prospects will be the only one the has two players going against each other and is also the only one to have goaltenders. This will ensure that Arizona will be represented in at the least the next round.
Calgary’s Brendan Burke has needed to be carried at some points during the playoffs. Meanwhile, Medicine Hat’s Marek Langhamer is among the Top 2 goaltenders in the WHL when it comes to goals against average and save percentage.
