Coyotes in Memorial Cup Playoffs Second Round Update
The OHL, WHL, and QMJHL’s second round of postseason play is all but finished. There have been plenty of Arizona Coyotes prospects playing a role for their respective Canadian Hockey League Junior clubs.
With the third round of the playoffs approaching, the number of future Coyotes alive has been cut down.

In the beginning of the postseason, Arizona had 12 prospects in postseason play. After the first round, that number was cut down to eight. Now, with the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL heading into their Western and Eastern Conference finals, respectively, only three prospects will be in play.
Ontario Hockey League
In the premier matchup of the entire CHL’s 2nd round, the London Knights were unable to conquer the Erie Otters. Max Domi, Christian Dvorak, and Co. were swept in four straight games against Connor McDavid and the Otters.
McDavid was at another level, having scored eight goals and six assists during the four game series. This included a five goal onslaught by McDavid himself during Game 2.
The Arizona 2014 first round pick’s season has also come to an end. Brendan Perlini‘s Niagara IceDogs were outmatched by the No. 1 overall seed in the OHL Eastern Conference, the Oshawa Generals. Perlini managed to pick two goals and two assists during the 2nd round.
- Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (Michael Bunting) vs Erie Otters
The Greyhounds are the lone team in the CHL that has not dropped a single game during the postseason. The first three games of the their second round series saw the Greyhounds score a combined 22 goals. Coyotes prospect, Michael Bunting, is a vital part of Sault Ste. Marie’s offensive unit.
It’s a matchup between two of the most dominant squads in the playoffs. This postseason has seen the Otters and Greyhounds win their last 16 consecutive games combined.
Bunting will be aided by Anaheim’s 2014 1st round pick, Nick Ritchie. The Otters will headline none other than Connor McDavid, who has 11 goals and 12 assists in EIGHT games.
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
Yan Pavel Laplante‘s Gatineau Olympiques were unable to stir up another upset. The No. 13 seeded Olympiques were dispatched by the No. 1 seed Rimouski Oceanic in five games. Laplante finished his postseason with finding the scoresheet in only game.
- Quebec Remparts (Anthony Duclair) vs TBD
After needing all seven games to determine a winner in the 1st round, the Remparts only needed the minimal four games in the second round. The No. 4 seeded Quebec outclassed the Charlottetown Islanders in a sweep. Anthony Duclair continued to stay under the radar with four points in the series.
Quebec’s opponent is yet to be determined. However, it’ll more than likely be the No. 2 Moncton Wildcats with the No. 1 Rimouski Oceanic taking on the winner of a matchup between six and seven seeds.
Western Hockey League
- Calgary Hitmen (Brendan Burke) vs Brandon Wheat Kings
In a matchup between two Arizona goalie prospects, Brendan Burke‘s Calgary Hitmen defeated Marek Langhamer‘s Medicine Hat Tigers. One interesting development was that Burke didn’t see action in the second round. This may be due to his insignificant numbers in the first round.
Calgary will head to the WHL Eastern Conference Finals to take on the Brandon Wheat Kings. Brandon has easily managed its way through the postseason, having only lost on two occasions. Their postseason run has gone through the Edmonton Oil Kings and Regina Pats.
