Cardinals Pick Up Option On Michael Floyd’s Contract
Michael Floyd could remain a member of the Arizona Cardinals for at least two more seasons. The organization picked up the young receiver’s option for the 2016 season on Thursday evening.
Arizona had until May 3 to decide on Floyd’s option. If the club would have passed, the former Notre Dame receiver would have become a free agent following this season.
The Red Birds get Floyd at a pretty good price. He’ll earn a base salary of $7.3 million guaranteed in 2016 only in case of an injury, according to Conor Orr of NFL.com.
Through his first four years in the league, Floyd has been up and down.

During his rookie season, the Golden Domer showed a lot of promise. Playing in all 16 games, Floyd caught 45 balls for 562 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Floyd really came on during his sophomore campaign in the NFL. Earning a bigger role alongside Larry Fitzgerald with an experienced quarterback Carson Palmer under center, the 2012 first round pick had 65 receptions and lead the team in receiving yards with 1,041.
Last season was a disappointing year for Floyd as he battled nagging injuries and had to deal with ineffective play under center.
He got off to a great start in the first couple weeks of the season, having five catches and 119 yards in Week One against the San Diego Chargers and then had five grabs for 119 yards a couple of weeks later against the 49ers at home. Floyd had only one 100+ receiving yard game the rest of the season with that coming in the final week against the Niners.
This decision by Steve Keim and company today was the right one though.
If Floyd goes out and has a monster season this year, the Cardinals will have him at a very affordable price in 2016. If he is once again inconsistent in 2015, they can get out of his contract and move on from him.
For the sake of this football team, let’s hope it’s the former. If Floyd can take that next step and be consistent on a weekly basis, this offense will be that much more dangerous in 2015.
