NFL Draft Gets Under Way In Chicago

Ladies and gents, the NFL Draft is officially under way in Chicago. In my opinion, today is probably the best day on the sports calendar.

For most teams across the league, it’s a great way to add an immediate starter or add depth to a position of need. For a select few organizations, it’s a way for them to make some noise with some head-scratching selections.

The draft has always been a special event for me. For years, I would fly down to LA to watch it with my dad. It was a great way to watch some football and spend some quality time with the man who helped raise me.

In recent years, I’ve stayed here in the Valley and have watched it with buddies. It’s always fun to watch the fan reactions on certain picks.

For most of my childhood, the Cardinals were selecting in the top five of most drafts. Recently, the Cards have been selecting towards the ends of drafts thanks to more regular season success.

Later tonight, the Cardinals will have the 24th pick, unless they move up or trade down. Many fans and those in the media have speculated on Arizona taking a running back with their first pick.

Personally, I’ve always been a fan of going with the best player concept in the draft, especially when you have a loaded roster with depth like the Cardinals have. This is the strategy that general manager Steve Keim has gone with in the past.

With how the league is, I’m not a fan of taking a running back in the first round. With the life span of a running back, it really has become a plug and play position. This draft is also deep enough where they can get a quality back on the second or third day.

Unlike in years past, I have full faith in this organization in selecting the right player to help this football team. We’ll find out shortly on who exactly that player ends up being.
