Diamondbacks Set to Host Padres

The Arizona Diamondbacks are coming off a three-game series that turned into a two game rain out in Denver. The rain outs lead to only two games being played in a rare double-header on Wednesday, the Diamondbacks sweeping the series.

The 12-14 Diamondbacks set to host Padres, as they look to get back to .500 at home with a four-game series. Timely hitting was key in their series sweep of the Rockies and they look to continue that against San Diego. In the two games against Colorado, the Diamondbacks had 31 hits and 18 runs. They look to continue their two-game win streak against former D-Back Justin Upton and division foe San Diego.

Justin Upton was traded, along with his brother Melvin, from Atlanta in the offseason, and the Padres also picked up former Dodger Matt Kemp in a trade. This looks to be an offensive series as both teams are coming off wins.

Odrisamer Despaigne (2-0) vs Rubby De La Rosa (2-2)

San Diego Padres’ pitcher Despaigne is coming off one of his worst starts of the season where he allowed four runs and on four hits in just 1.2 innings. Despaigne has a 2.95 ERA in his 5 starts, and he looks to continue that against the Diamondbacks.

On the other side of the diamond, is the Diamondbacks’ pitcher De La Rosa who is also coming off one of his worst start of this short season. He allowed 5 runs on 5 innings of work against the Dodgers. De La Rosa has a 5.40 ERA in his 5 starts, but hopes to improve that heading into Thursday.

Friday- 5/8

James Shields (3-0) vs Jeremy Hellickson (1-3)

San Diego pitcher James Shields is off to a great start on the season, with a 3.72 ERA in his 6 starts. Shields had a rough outing in his last start against the Rockies, giving up 9 hits and 5 runs in 5.1 innings. He will look to have a better outing in game two of this series.

Jeremy Hellickson has had an inconsistent season, so far, for the Diamondbacks. In his 5 starts this season he has an ERA of 5.20, and has never made it through the 7th inning. He will be looking to get a win for only the second time this season against the Padres.

Saturday- 5/9

Tyson Ross (1-3) vs Chase Anderson (0-1)

Tyson Ross has had a strong start to this season for the Padres, only allowing an ERA of 4.15 this season. He is coming off a very strong start, where he went 7 innings allowing just 7 hits and 2 runs. The Padres offense stalled and he was given the loss, but the will try to hold the D-Backs offense to that in this series.

The Diamondbacks’ Chase Anderson is also coming off a strong start. He allowed no runs and just 2 hits in his May 3rd start against the Dodgers. Anderson has a season ERA of 3.38, and has had multiple quality starts for the D-Backs. He looks to continue his good season on Saturday.

First pitch scheduled for 5:10 p.m. MT.

Sunday- 5/10

Andrew Cashner (1-5) vs TBD

The Padres will end the series with Andrew Cashner. Cashner has been doing well, but he has received little offensive support. In his last start he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 quality innings. Cashner has a 3.16 ERA on the season, and looks to continue that in the final game of the series.

With Archie Bradley still recovering from being on the receiving end of a line drive, the D-Backs have yet to announce Sunday’s starter. This could have been the recent call-up in Robbie Ray, but with the rainouts in Denver he pitched in game two of the Wednesday double-header. We will all see what Chip Hale and the Diamondbacks do with this rotation spot.

First pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m. MT.
