The Arizona Diamondbacks split the series with the San Diego Padres. This series featured a blow out on Thursday, followed by two straight close games losses, and then a Mother’s Day win for the D-Backs.

Thursday-

Padres- 0 Diamondbacks-11

Yes you read that score correctly. And yes, the team was wearing their throwback jerseys; obviously it was Throwback Thursday!

The Arizona Diamondbacks put on an offensive show, amounting to 17 hits and 11 runs. This was all while shutting down the San Diego Padres, allowing only 3 hits.

D-Backs starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa (3-2) went 7 innings allowing only 5 players on base. His opposition in Odrisamer Despaigne (2-1) went 5 innings allowing 10 hits and 8 runs.

In this game the Diamondbacks tied a franchise record for doubles in one game. The D-Backs were able to compile 8 doubles in 8 innings. David Peralta, Mark Trumbo, Paul Goldschmidt, Chris Owings, and Ender Inciarte each had a double, while catcher Tuffy Gosewisch had three. Doubles were not the only extra base hits off Diamondbacks’ bats. Trumbo and Goldschmidt each had a solo home run. The only two D-Backs in the starting lineup without a hit was Nick Ahmed and pitcher De La Rosa.

Two-out RBIs helped the team compile their runs. There were 7 two-out RBIs in this game; which included 4 from Gosewisch, and one by Owings, Goldschmidt, and Peralta.

With this win the Diamondbacks were within a game of .500 and were on a three game win streak.

Friday-

Padres-6 Diamondbacks-5

A back-and-forth game, with the Diamondbacks coming back in the 6th to tie the game at 5, was not enough as the Padres win 6-5.

Will Venable (3) home run gave the San Diego Padres a lead in the top of the 2nd, and then a Chris Owings (2) 2-run home run in the 2nd put the Diamondbacks on top. But a Matt Kemp RBI single in the 3rd, Will Venable scored on a fielder’s choice in the 4th, and Wil Myers (5) home run and Cory Spangenberg scored on a fielder’s choice in the 5th, put the Padres up 5-2.

The Diamondbacks were able to start the come back with an AJ Pollock (2) home run in the 5th, then back-to-back home runs by Paul Goldschmidt (9) and David Peralta (4). But Will Venable singles in a run in the 7th to retake the lead for the Padres.

James Shields (4-0) went 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs with an ERA of 4.25, in the win for the Padres. Craig Kimbrel (7) was credited with the save.

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson went 4.2 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs, in a no decision. Enrique Burgos (0-1) came in for one inning, giving up one hit and one run, and was given the loss for the D-Backs.

The loss snapped the teams three game win streak.

Saturday-

Padres-6 Diamondbacks-4

A late comeback for the Diamondbacks forced extra innings, but a two run 12th for the Padres was too much to overcome. Padres took game 3, 6-4.

Another back and forth game, which featured a David Peralta RBI triple, an RBI single by pitcher Chase Anderson, and a Danny Dorn double to score two in the bottom of the 9th, forcing extra innings.

In the 12th Justin Upton (8), former D-Back, hit a home run, then an Alexi Amarista single added one more to secure the Padres win. The Diamondbacks were unable to score in the bottom of the 12th.

Kevin Quackenbush (1-0) was credited with the win for his two innings with one hit for San Diego. Starting pitcher for the Padres, Tyson Ross went 6 innings allowing five hits and 2 earned runs, in a no decision.

Randall Delgado (1-2) was given the loss after he went 2.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs. Chase Anderson, D-Backs starting pitcher, had a very quality start only allowing one run on 5 hits, in 7 strong innings.

The relief pithing was unable to secure the win for the Diamondbacks, allowing 5 runs in 5 relief innings.

Sunday-

Padres-1 Diamondbacks-2

Early runs were enough in a Sunday, Mother’s Day matinée as the Arizona Diamondbacks win 2-1.

The Mother’s Day game featured a great-pitched game. Diamondbacks started Daniel Hudson for the first time in almost two years. Hudson came off two Tommy John surgeries on his pitching elbow. He was on a pitch count and went 3.1 innings, allowing two hits in the no decision. J.C. Ramirez (1-0) in his first appearance for the D-Backs was given the win, after he went 2.2 innings allowing 4 hits and one run. Addison Reed (2) was credited with the save.

For the Padres, Andrew Cashner (1-6) was given the loss after he went 7 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs.

Aaron Hill (3) started the scoring with a home run in the 2nd and then AJ Pollock (3) hit a home run in the 3rd. Jedd Gyorko doubled in the 6th to score a run for the Padres, but that was all they could do.

A great game from the Diamondbacks bullpen limited the Padres damage in the win.
