Diamondbacks Sweep Marlins in Miami

The Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Miami Marlins in their four-game series. Arizona is now 18-21 on the season, while Miami is 16-25 and are on a 7-game losing skid. The Diamondbacks had the right combination of pitching and offense to beat sweep the Marlins, for the first time since 2007.

Monday:

Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 2 (F/13)

 Of course the first game of this series would be the longest, and it was also Dan Jennings debut as Miami Marlins manager. Jennings was announced as manager early Monday, after Mike Redmond was let go on Sunday evening.

The 13 innings of baseball featured 15 combined hits and solid pitching from both the D-Backs and Marlins.

Diamondbacks starter Rubby De La Rosa (4-2) went nine innings allowing two runs on six hits in a no-decision. Former closer Addison Reed (1-2) was given the win for hit one inning in the 12th. Enrique Burgos (1) received his first save in the 13th.

Marlins starting pitcher Dan Haren (4-2) went eight innings allowing only two runs on five hits was given the no-decision. Steve Cishek (1-4) was credited with the loss after he allowed a run in the 13th.

The Diamondbacks got two runs in the 4th off a Yasmany Tomas double that drove in Ender Inciarte and Paul Goldschmidt. David Peralta had a pitch hit double to win the game in the 13th, scoring Chris Owings.

Miami got their two runs in the 7th off a J.T. Realmuto (1) home run, scoring Justin Bour.

This was the Diamondbacks’ fifth extra inning game of the season.

Tuesday:

Diamondbacks 4, Marlins 2

Again the Arizona Diamondbacks got out to an early lead, and again they lose it. This game was different though; the Diamondbacks were able to comeback late and win the game.

Diamondbacks’ starter Jeremy Hellickson (1-3) was given the no-decision after he went six innings allowing two runs on four hits. Reliever Daniel Hudson (1-1) got credit for the win after his two innings, allowing only one hit. Enrique Burgos (2) completed the game for the save.

For Miami, starter Tom Koehler (2-3) received a no-decision, allowing two runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings. Reliever Michael Dunn (0-3) went two-thirds of an innings, allowing three hits and two runs, in the loss.

Arizona got out to an early lead in the 4th, the first David Peralta scored on a Dee Gordon error, then Nick Ahmed had a bunt single to score Yasmany Tomas. The Marlins were able to comeback in the 6th, when Giancarlo Stanton (12) hit his 12th home run of the season to tie the game. The D-Backs got two runs in the 8th off an A.J. Pollock (4) home run, that scored Mark Trumbo.

Wednesday:

Diamondbacks 6, Marlins 1

The Diamondbacks got a lead combined with phenomenal pitching, and ran with it, literally.

Arizona was able to steal seven bases, and A.J. Pollock had three of those with what many called a “steal-cycle.” Pollock were able to steal 2nd, 3rd, and home plate in the D-Backs win.

Diamondbacks’ Chase Anderson (1-1) went into the 9th inning only allowing four hits and one run, in the win.

David Phelps (2-1) for the Marlins was given the loss after going five innings allowing four runs on five hits.

The D-Backs got out to an early lead in the 1st with a David Peralta ground out that scored A.J. Pollock. In the 2nd Nick Ahmed doubled to score Aaron Hill, then Chase Anderson grounded out to score Nick Ahmed. Then in the 5th with Yasmany Tomas batting Pollock stole home and Peralta stole second. The final D-Backs run came in the 9th off a Peralta single that scored Pollock.

The only Marlins run came in the 9th off a Giancarlo Stanton double play, Justin Bour scored.

Thursday:

Diamondbacks 7, Marlins 6

The Diamondbacks completed the sweep of the Marlins, in a game that was back and forth.

Arizona got an early run in the 1st off a Yasmany Tomas double, scoring Ender Inciarte. The Marlins came back in the bottom of the 1st with three runs of their own; Giancarlo Stanton singled to drive in Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich hit into a double play that scored Marcell Ozuna, and Justin Bour singled to score Giancarlo Stanton. The D-Backs were able to get one run in the 2nd when Ender Inciarte singles to score Jordan Pacheco. In the 4th Adeiny Hechavarria hit a sacrifice fly to score T.J. Realmuto, giving the Marlins a 4-2 lead.

The Diamondbacks got the lead in the 6th, with a 4-run inning. Jordan Pacheco hit a sac fly to score Yasmany Tomas, Cliff Pennington doubled to score Mark Trumbo, Aaron Hill hit a sac fly to score Chris Owings, and Ender Inciarte singled to score Cliff Pennington. In the bottom of the 6th the Marlins got two runs off singles by Marcell Ozuna and Martin Prado to tie the game up at six. Finally in the 8th A.J. Pollock singled to score Cliff Pennington, and give the D-Backs a 7-6 win.

The pitching in this game was not fantastic, but the Diamondbacks bullpen was able to hold the late lead and get the team the sweep.

For the Diamondbacks, starting pitcher Archie Bradley (2-1) went five innings, allowing nine hits and four runs, got the no-decision. Andrew Chafin (2-0) was credited with the win after he went one and one-third innings of no hit baseball. Brad Ziegler (1) received the save, in the Diamondbacks win.

The Marlins’ starter Mat Latos (1-4) went five and one-thirds innings allowing six runs and seven hits, credited with the no-decision. Sam Dyson (2-1) was given the loss after going only two-thirds of an inning allowing one run on two hits.

The Diamondbacks will travel back to Chase Field to face the Chicago Cubs in a three game series, starting Friday at 6:40pm MT.
