The one-year anniversary of Daryl Washington’s suspension from the NFL is coming up and the Cardinals linebacker is still uncertain of his future with the league.

Washington was suspended on May 30 of last year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. It was the second offense for the Cardinals star linebacker as he was suspended in 2013 for the same thing.

According to Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910, Washington isn’t eligible for reinstatement until the 30th of this month at the earliest. However, Washington is currently “unaware” of where he stands with his reinstatement from the league.

Here’s a little more info from Jurecki.

"He was expected to apply for reinstatement within the last month, plus still hasn’t been disciplined for a past domestic violence arrest. Likely facing at least a two to six-game ban in 2015.Washington claimed a few months ago that he hasn’t failed any random or missed drug tests, and has also completed 38 weeks of anger management and domestic violence classes."

It’s good to see that Washington has grown up and is getting help from his problems, but he put this team in a bad situation to begin with. There needs to be a debate on whether a player should be suspended for smoking pot, but there’s no debate on that topic for laying your hand on a woman, especially one who gave birth to your child.

Fortunately, the Cardinals have been proactive in knowing that they are going to be without Washington for at least a portion of this season. During this offseason, they have added veterans Sean Weatherspoon and Darryl Sharpton and brought in four undrafted free agents, with BYU’s Alani Fua being the biggest name of the group.

None of those players are of Washington’s caliber of course. When he’s actually on the field, Washington is one of the 3-5 best linebackers in the game, but the Cardinals have at least added depth to insider linebacker to deal with the loss of Washington for up six games.
