NBA Draft Profile: Frank Kaminsky

In Chad Ford’s latest mock draft he has the Phoenix Suns selecting Wisconsin’s 7’1″, 231-pound center Frank Kaminsky with the 13th overall pick.

Kaminsky is a very interesting prospect. Initially he was a late-first round draft prospect, but after leading Wisconsin to the March Madness championship game his draft-stock increased incredibly.

Kaminsky was a four-year player at the University of Wisconsin and started his final two seasons.

In his junior year Kaminsky averaged 13.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game on 52.8 percent shooting, including 37.8 percent from behind the three-point line. But, his numbers got even better in his senior season.

This past year Kaminsky was a bigger part of the Badger offense and averaged 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists (double his amount in his junior season), and 1.5 blocks per game. He also improved his shooting numbers by shooting 54.7 percent from the field, including a 41.6 percent mark from distance and a 78.0 percent clip from the charity stripe.

A big man who can score the basketball and also play lock-down defense is someone the Suns should definitely target. Kaminsky is more NBA-ready than Kelly Oubre, who the Suns may also look at taking in the NBA Draft.

Slotting Kaminsky into the Suns’ front-court rotation would be the best of both worlds to allow Kaminsky time to develop and adjust as a young player in the NBA and also to help the Suns depth in the paint.

Kaminsky is flying under-the-radar more than I personally expected as he put up tremendous numbers at the collegiate level in a top-notch conference as well. Suns fans should be very happy if they hear Kaminsky’s name read as the 13th overall pick on June 25, 2015 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
