The Arizona Diamondbacks (25-27) get ready to face the New York Mets (29-25) in a four game series at Chase Field.

More from Heat Waved

Both Arizona and New York are coming off series wins. The Diamondbacks were able to come back in game two and three of their series against the Atlanta Braves and the Mets took games one and two before losing game three of their series to the Padres.

While the Mets are in a division race, the Diamondbacks are trying to get back to .500 and climb up in the division.

Arizona currently leads the National League in offense and has been able to get runs when they needed them. As a team the D-Backs have a batting average of .265 and has combined for 241 runs in 51 games. New York, on the other hand, is in the top five of pitching earns run average with a team ERA of 3.37. This series should be a great pitching battle versus a great offensive team.

The key to this series will be the performance of Paul Goldschmidt, who is currently hotter offensively than Phoenix in July, and Jacob deGrom, who is in the top ten of the National League in earn run average.

The Diamondbacks can get back to .500 if they win three of the four games against the New York Mets.

Thursday:

Matt Harvey (5-3) vs Jeremy Hellickson (3-3)

6:40 PM MT

Matt Harvey has faced only four Diamondbacks in the last five years; Paul Goldschmidt (0-for-3), Jordan Pacheco (1-for-1), Aaron Hill (3-for-7), and Cliff Pennington (1-for-3). Harvey has been struggling of late, going 0-2 in his last three starts giving up an earn run average of 4.95. He is looking to turn it around against the Diamondbacks in game one.

Harvey’s opponent, Jeremy Hellickson, has been preforming well lately. He is 2-0 in his last three starts, with an earned run average of 3.38. The Diamondbacks hope that they can get some good pitching from Hellickson so there will be no need for comebacks.

Jon Niese (3-5) vs Chase Anderson (1-1)

    6:40 PM MT

Jon Niese has really struggled; going 0-2 in his last three starts with a 10.54 earned run average. Niese has faced several Diamondbacks in previous years, but Goldschmidt and Pollock have dominated (both hitting above .400).

Chase Anderson has been doing well in his late three starts, 1-0 with an 4.26 ERA. The only Met that Anderson has faced is Michael Cuddyer, who is hitting .167 on six at-bats.

Both Niese and Anderson want to improve on their previous performances, and they look to do that on Friday.

    Saturday:

Bartolo Colon (8-3) vs Archie Bradley (2-3)

    7:10 PM MT

Bartolo Colon has been average in his three previous starts, going 2-1 with a 7.27 earned run average. Colon has not been so good against D-Backs hitters, allowing hitter to hit above .250; this includes Jarrod Saltalamacchia who has faced Colon 19 times and is hitting .263.

Colon’s opponent is Archie Bradley. Bradley has struggled since coming back from being hit in the face. He is 0-2 in his last three starts, having a 9.88 earned run average over those games. Bradley needs a good performance to make sure he keeps his spot in the rotation.

    Sunday:

Jacob deGrom (6-4) vs Josh Collmenter (3-5)

    1:10 PM MT

Jacob deGrom is the pitcher to watch in this series. He has been great this season, being 2-0 in his last three starts. In those three starts he has an ERA of 0.77, yes it is that low, and he has only faced one Diamondback in Saltalamacchia.

Josh Collmenter has a tough task ahead of him, not only is he facing one of the best pitchers in the last month, but has struggled in his last three starts. Collmenter has not gotten a decision in the last three games, while having a 4.02 ERA over that stretch.

This will be an interesting game as the two pitchers are currently seem to be heading in opposite directions.
