Diamondbacks Split Series with Mets
By Kody Acevedo
The Arizona Diamondbacks had to settle for the split in a four-game series with the New York Mets after dropping the finale Sunday 3-6.
The D-backs won consecutive games on Friday and Saturday to take a 2-1 lead in the series after the Mets took to the opener on Thursday.

Sunday’s finale wrapped up a seven-game home stand that saw the D-backs go 4-3 and improve to 27-29 overall this season. Arizona now sits just four games backs of the Dodgers in the NL West.
And speaking of the Boys in Blue, the D-backs will hit the road and land in Los Angeles to begin a three-game series with the Dodgers beginning on Monday night.
But before we focus on next week, here’s a quick recap of the series with New York.
Thursday:
Mets 6, Diamondbacks 2
The D-backs struck first after newcomer Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered in the bottom of the 2nd inning to make it a 1-0 game.
But the D-backs bullpen allowed all six runs to score in the last four innings of the game and the D-back offense had no answers when asked to respond late in the game. Arizona starter Robbie Ray threw five shutout innings. He gave up just six hits and only allowed one walk while striking out four.
But reliever Dominic Leone (0-5), who came in to pitch the 6th, allowed three runs to score and the Mets took a 3-1 lead. Leone was later handed the loss.

New York added a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth and walked away with an easy 6-2 win. Mets’ starter Matt Harvey (6-3) was awarded the win.
Friday:
Mets 2, Diamondbacks 7
Friday night was pretty much a mirror opposite from Thursday as far as the offense was concerned. This time, the Mets struck first on a Michael Cuddyer home run in the top of the 2nd inning.
The Mets led it 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. But this time, the D-backs would respond. A Paul Goldschmidt single with A.J. Pollock on base followed by a Yasmany Tomas double made it a 3-2 D-backs’ lead.
Arizona added four insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th and eventually won it 7-2 to even the series at one game apiece. Jeremy Hellickson (4-3) got the start for Arizona and threw six innings and gave up the only two runs of the night on six hits. He took home his fourth win of the season.
Mets’ starter Jon Niese (3-6) was handed the loss after giving up three runs and six hits in six innings of work.

Saturday:
Mets 1, Diamondbacks 2
In an outstanding pitchers dual between Bartolo Colon and the D-backs bullpen, Arizona was able to squeeze out two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning courtesy of a homer by Wellington Castillo off of Colon.
A solo big fly by the Mets’ Juan Lagares in the top of 2nd inning was New York’s only offense of the night.
Colon (8-4) took the loss after seven innings of work. He gave up two runs on five hits and struck out seven in his fourth loss of the season.
The win went to D-backs’ reliever Randall Delgado (3-2) who pitched 1 1/3 innings and didn’t allow a run or a hit.
It was a tough night for starter Chase Anderson who went 5 2/3 innings and allowed just one run and eight hits, but ultimately walked away with a no decision. He also walked a batter and struck out six.
Sunday:
Mets 6, Diamondbacks 3
It was pretty much all New York in the finale.
On getaway day, the Mets went to work early, putting three runs on the board in the first two innings of the game.
Curtis Granderson did something sorta ‘Grandish’ (as John Sterling use to say when Grandson played for the other New York team) and homered in the top of the 1st inning to give New York an early 1-0 lead.
The D-backs answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and led it 2-1 going into the 2nd inning. But their lead was short-lived as Eric Campbell blasted a ball to deep center field and the Mets regained a 3-2 lead in the 2nd.
Things were quiet until the 5th when Sterling’s ‘Grandyman’ homered again to make it a 4-2 Mets lead. (Two homers in a game is something sorta Grandish no matter who you are.) The Mets tacked on another run in the 6th thanks to a solo blast by Wilmer Flores.
The D-backs were again quiet going into the final frames of the game. They dropped the finale and lost their chances of winning their second series in a row at home.
Josh Collmenter (3-6) took the loss while Mets’ starter Jacob deGrom (6-4) picked up his 6th win of the year.
Up next, the D-backs will head to California for the week. They’ll have an off day Thursday after three games with the Dodgers, then head up North to face the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.
After that, they’ll make a quick stop in Anaheim to face the Angels for two games at Angel Stadium and then return to Chase Field and host the Angels for two games to wrap up an odd four-game split-series.
