2015 MLB Draft: Where to Watch
The 2015 MLB Draft kicks off on Monday, June 8 and will run through Wednesday, June 10 with teams vying to find the next Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and Giancarlo Stanton.
Following a MLB-worst 64-98 record in 2014, the Arizona Diamondbacks hold the first overall pick in the MLB Draft and there are a few prospects who could hear their name called first.
It is the second time in franchise history that the Diamondbacks have held the first overall pick in the MLB Draft. The last time they did was in 2005 when they drafted Justin Upton first overall.
Diamondbacks scouting director Deric Ladnier announced that the D’Backs know who they will be taking with the first pick. They haven’t told the prospect that they are taking him yet, but have let five prospects know that they could possibly be the first overall pick.
"“We’ve reached out to the group of guys that we’re considering just to let them know that we were considering them,” Ladnier said. “We haven’t said, ‘We’re taking you.’ It’s more of a professional courtesy than anything so that they can be aware. I would assume all of them want to be the No. 1 pick in the country.”"
In one of the deeper drafts in recent history there is many speculation of who the first overall pick will be with no clear-cut number one guy.
A guy the Diamondbacks have been following closely is Vanderbilt SS Dansby Swanson, but LSU SS Alex Bergman could also sneak up the draft board and be chosen first.
Other names to watch for in the early-goings include: SS Brendan Rogers (Lake Mary High School (FL.)), RHP Dillion Tate (UC Santa Barbara), OF Daz Cameron (East Landing Christian Academy (GA.)), and LHP Tyler Jay (Illinois).
There is a nice mix of both collegiate athletes and high school athletes in the running for the first overall pick and all of them have the skill sets to produce at the MLB level once progressing through the minor leagues.
