Player Spotlight: QB Logan Thomas

We didn’t see much of quarterback Logan Thomas his rookie season what can he do to ensure he has a roster spot come Week 1?

Logan Thomas was drafted out of Virginia in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft with hopes that he could be a project type of QB. The Cardinals considered starting Thomas for the season finale, after the injuries to Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton. After a few shaky practices Coach Arians decided to go with Ryan Lindley, who was a practice journeyman to say the least.

Lindley has been run out of town due to a horrid playoff performance. One in which the Cardinals gained less than 100 yards for the whole game.

Arians had a very reasonable explanation for why he decided to play Lindley instead of Thomas. His reasoning was that he didn’t want to put Thomas in a position to fail. He believes that those scars never really heal. If you ask me, that’s some good thinking. We’ve seen many times over the past that young quarterbacks tend to struggle early on and in a lot of cases continued to fail and aren’t in the league any more.

The plan for this offseason has been to ensure that if he is thrust into the spot that the chances of failure are slim. Thomas has been getting more reps this offseason. The increase in reps could partly be that he has more experience in the offense now or that Palmer and Stanton are still working through their respective knee injuries.

Either way don’t anticipate too much out of Thomas this year. He’s still a raw talent. He was impressive at Virginia (threw for over 9,000 rushed for almost 1400). He is a big body who still needs time to adjust to the pro game if he is to make it in the league.
