He will not make the roster because of his defense, but Justin Bethel will make the roster because of his exceptional ability to play special teams. Bethel has played cornerback in small roles with the Cardinals, but head coach Bruce Arians thinks there is untapped potential in him at the corner position.
In 2014, Bethel played in all 16 games, where he had 25 total tackles, an interception, and two forced fumbles. He made the 2014 and 2015 Pro Bowl as a special teams player, where he currently receives most of his playing time. As a special teams player Bethel had 18 special teams tackles, a blocked field goal, and a force fumble on a punt return.
The Cardinals would like Bethel to move into a more of a traditional cornerback role. Teammate Calais Campbell said there is huge potential in Bethel, but he just needs to be thrown in there to figure it out. Will this be the season they throw him in there to just figure it out? We will see!
