3. Sparky (Arizona State)

Arizona State had originally had an owl as their mascot before switching to a bulldog in the early 1900’s. In November 1946 the school’s student council had the student body vote whether or not to change the school’s mascot to a Sun Devil. The vote came in favor of the change, 819-196.

Bert Anthony, Disney illustrator and Arizona State alum, designed Sparky the Sun Devil. According to the Sparky wikipedia page…

"Anthony is rumored to have based Sparky’s facial features on that of his former boss, Walt Disney."

As a Disney enthusiast I find that to be really cool. And I suppose as an Arizona State student the bias may or may not be there when I rank good ol’ Sparky here at number three.
