Washington State adopted “Cougars” as their mascot name in 1919, but never had a physical mascot until 1927. Butch T. Cougar was a live cougar from 1927-1978 and has since been represented by a costumed mascot.

Butch T. Cougar won the 2006 Capital One Mascot of the Year award.

The student inside the costume never reveals himself/herself during the majority of the school year, but usually at the last basketball game of the season the student will reveal themselves.
