7. Swoop (Utah)

When the University of Utah began, the school had two mascot names; “Utes” and “Redskins. This stood tall until 1972 when the university disassociated themselves from the “Redskins” mascot due to its offensiveness.

During the years that “Redskins” was used as the mascot the school used an American Indian as the mascot, but the American Indian was no longer the mascot when the university dropped the mascot name.

Swoop is a red-tailed hawk and was introduced as the university’s costumed mascot in 1996 after receiving consent from the Ute tribe.
