Joe Bruin originally came along in 1924 for all UCLA sports teams and has now been the official mascot for UCLA for over 90 years.
Originally, UCLA had a grizzly bear as their mascot, but in 1926 the university changed to a “Bruin” while UC Berkeley changed their mascot to the “Bears”.
Like other universities, Joe Bruin began as a live bear until the mid-1960’s. Since then it has been a student in the costumed mascot and pumps up the crowd at UCLA sporting events.
Joe Bruin has made the finals for the Capital One Mascot of the Year award in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2010.
