The Arizona Diamondbacks had a disappointing weekend as they were swept by the Chicago Cubs. This was a series where the D-Backs pitching staff could not contain the Chicago offense and the Cubs contained the D-Backs’ bats, for the most part. Just two weeks ago, Arizona was only 5 ½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the division lead in the NL West, but now they are currently in fourth place and an abysmal 13 games out.

Zack Godley took the mound to start this game, after having great success in his first three career starts. Godley found no such success in this one. Godley only lasted 3 2/3 innings, gave up six runs on four hits, walked six and struck out only three. Godley was wild early on as both Kris Bryant and Javier Baez drew bases loaded walks.

It got worse as Addison Russell hit two homers in this one. But, the large dagger came off the bat of first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who hit a grand slam off of A.J. Schugel to make it 12-2 Chicago.

The D-Backs were able to score five runs, but that was not nearly enough. Chris Owings and Phil Gosselin both had RBI doubles, Nick Ahmed had an RBI triple and Jake Lamb added a solo home run to account for all the D-Backs offense.

The D-Backs dropped this one 14-5.
