The D-Backs were blown out of the water last night at the hands of the San Diego Padres. The Padres were able to score five runs in the first inning and five runs again in the fifth inning. Wil Myers and Corey Spangenberg led the Padres offensively. Myers finished 2-4 with a home run and four RBI and Spangenberg finished 2-4 with a double and three RBI.

Jeremy Hellickson only lasted one inning, giving up five runs, three of which were earned, in his first start since coming off of the disabled list. He was not sharp as he could not find the strike zone and, of course, gave up the home run to Myers to lead off the game.

Paul Goldschmidt was able to get his 100th RBI on the season, which made him the first D-Backs player since Luis Gonzalez to have multiple 100 RBI seasons.

The D-Backs dropped game one of the series by a score of 10-3 and will look to bounce back.

Here are the pitching matchups for the rest of the series…

Jhoulys Chacin vs. Tyson Ross

In two starts for the D-Backs this season, Chacin pitched very well. In his last start on August 29, he held the Oakland A’s to just two runs over seven innings, while giving up only five hits and striking out six. In two starts this year, Chacin is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA.

Ross is coming off a good start against the Colorado Rockies. Over seven innings, Ross gave up three runs on four hits while striking out six. The bad part of this start was that Ross gave up three solo home runs, which accounted for all of the Rockies’ runs. On the season, Ross is 10-10 with a 3.24 ERA. Ross has been good, but not great the past two years. His 2.81 ERA last year was much better than his ERA this season.

Robbie Ray vs. Andrew Cashner

Ray was finally able to earn a win in his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers, his first win since July 7 against the Texas Rangers. Against the Dodgers, Ray went five innings, giving up no runs on only two hits, while walking three and striking out two. The main factor in that game was Ray finally received some run support as the D-Backs scored 12 runs in the game. Ray now has a record of 4-11 with a 3.54 ERA.

Cashner has been pretty disappointing this season, and that was the case in his last start against the San Francisco Giants. Cashner only lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, while walking five and striking out seven. The strikeouts have been there all year for Cashner as he has struck out 146 on the season. But, his record now stands at 5-15 with an ERA of 4.27. Cashner has amazing talent but hasn’t been able to put it together this year.

The D-Backs will look to finish this series strong after being beaten badly in the first game. First pitch tonight is set for 6:40pm local time.
